St. Michael's Grammar School had a small beginning in a five room rented building in Shakti Nagar. This school was the fruition of the long cherished dream of an outstanding educationist, Mr. E. Mendonza, for an educational institution with a difference.

In January 1967, the school moved to a more spacious building in Model Town. As the enrollment and programs expanded. Mr. E. Mendonza decided in 1969 that for the better growth of the school, he would establish a registered educational society under the title of the St. Michael's Educational Foundation. The school then moved to Shahbad Daulatpur and classes were started in temporary buildings in January 1972. The first batch of students passed out of school in January 1976. On February 26, 1977, the foundation stone was laid for the new St. Michael's Grammar School by Rt. Rev. Dr. Angelo Fernandes.

  1. I was at Mr. Mendonza's school for just four years from my class III to VII.I was in class three for a few months. But almost every student who has come to my class in the last thirty years knows mr. Mendonza as I keep telling them about him and the profound impact he has had on me. My book on Hindu Law, published by OUP is dedicated to Mr. Mendonza.

    Yolanda was in my class.

  3. Hi everybody. Hv been looking for SMGS desperately. I was there with my brother, Vikas Dhingra, right from nursery thru class X...when I moved to Manav Sthali School in 1979. My seniors were Rajesh Batra, Brijesh Batra. My class mates were Ashwani Vohra, Deepak Israni, Ragini, Sunaina Bhatia, Tanuj Rampal. From the teachers I remember..ofcourse, Mrs. & Mr. Mendonza (God bless them), Mr.Sehgal,Mr.Richard,Mr.Dhingra for Bio..in Badli. Mrs.Massey for Hindi. I met her grandson recently. She left this world 3 years ago. Ms.Sohi...then there was a teacher, walking distance from the B2/15A school...use to teach us English...if I remember correctly. She stayed opposite the Sabharwal brothers home.

Please tell me where to meet...whom to call...I can go on.
I am today because of SMGS.

  5. I remember those days when we use to have the annual function and everybody was required to go on stage...all decked up. We were taken into the 'green room' on the ground floor of the school...just behind the stairs and Melanie and other teachers put lipstick...colored our cheeks..powdered our faces. What fun. Mr.Sehgal use to be at the gates...in his whites...and I vividly remember...he knew every single child and their parents by name. He used to make us jump of the wall...right next to the school gate...during the PT classes...with no exceptions of girls or boys. Can write more...but enough for today. Please call me on my cell 98110-16168.

Mr Mendonza's thundering voice as he sang 'All things bright and beautiful'
    Paritosh,Divya Harmilapi,Rekha Aggarwal,Anita Singh,Preeti,Kanwaljeet,Mukesh Monga,Om Prakash(O.P ),Ajay were my classmates.I was in Mercury House.
Mrs Singh was the teacher who stayed near the school...taught us English and Social studies in Class V.Remember Mr Satpal...

  8. Vandana morning. Thanks for reminding all these names. Mukesh Monga was the star of Mercury House. I remember going to his place as our mothers' were friends. Kanwaljeet...was he not the one who hit the cricket ball out of the grounds all the times..? Mr.Satpal...short statured...in his whites...hair oiled..? We loved our seniors. Was Rajiv Lal's elder sister in your class too..?

Remind me...was Ms.Sohi not the one who use to come on a mobike..?

I still mumble all the tunes Mrs.Mendonza taught us then. She was a gift to all of us. Am not sure if that breed of teachers still exists.

School Group....when do we meet next please.........

  10. The memories are very sweet but blurred.I think it was Mukesh who hit the ball out of the grounds.Yes,Mr Satpal was short statured.I remember when he got married our entire class landed at his place and he organized a special chai-pakora party for us.It is true that breed of teachers do not exist any more so selfless and loving.I am trying to get in touch with my batch mates but have not met with much success as yet but the search is on.....

  11. Morning. Was it Mukesh or Kanwaljeet...when the ball landed...literally...on Zuthshi's head..! I also remember the name of our teacher who stayed down the lane from the school..Mrs.Dogra. Am not sure what she taught then. It was either English or Hindi. Was Rajiv Lal's sister in your batch..? They lived in Ashok Vihar..then. Where is the moderator who started the blog..? Please take notice and revert with whereabouts as we could get together soon. The most fun we had was on the last row of the bus when it use to go over the hump...just before we reached Badli school. Are you in Delhi..? I could plan a get together...mid-May.

    4. Hi Simi! Thank you for starting the SMGS blog! Good to read of the old, beloved people and school history... I am Padmini Iyer. I started school at Model town at the age of three and a half in 1967 - still recall Mrs Mendonza (Angela, I think?) with her rosy cheeks, smile, playing the upright piano that stood in the corner of the large garage converted to Nursery class, and Mrs Sehgal. Mr Mendonza introduced innovative ways of teaching, he was way ahead of his time. I attribute my quality of education to him and his absolutely marvellous staff, especially the first eight years. Mr Sehgal was a wonderful PT Teacher. My beloved Miss Rekhi next year - I adored her. Melanie Mendonza never taught me, but was a wonderful teacher who taught my sister Priya Iyer. Miss P. Sohi, Miss Renu, Mrs Massey, Mrs Sood, Mr Nathan, the young Mr Angelo Mendonza, Mr George Tweedie, Mr Pathak, Mr Satpal Singh, Mr Jaswant Singh... the list is endless. And classmates - Charu Bhatnagar, Anil Chawla, Sonia Bhatia, Poonam Mehta, Sharad Gandhi, Shishir Borle, Sanjay Srivastav (I think), Syed Arif Hassan Abidi, Kawaljit Singh...
What a school - everyone learnt to speak good English (today the hill public schools where I live - some of the topmost in India - cannot manage that), everyone had a chance to explore their abilities, got a chance to shine. The teachers were all truly dedicated.
Thank you, SMGS! And thanks, Simi.

    5. And how could I forget Mr L.C. Garg, the art teacher, who taught us freedom of expression through finger painting (as infants), sketching, painting, clay modelling, soapstone and wood carving, and was a brilliant sculptor himself. He encouraged me and pushed me to achieve. Mr Mendonza gave him a free hand. The huge statue of St Michael slaying the Serpent was made by him.

  14. Thanks for reminding all the names. Simi Gogia...my memory is failing me here as she must hv been my batchmate then as I passed out in 1981 too. I do remember Simi Israni and her brother Deepak.

I spoke to Rajesh Batra today and he is in touch with a few of our school mates. I vividly remember his batchmate, Sunil, who use to sing on stage eventhough I am forgetting his best rendering....was a Hindi movie song....is now on the tip of my tongue..maybe tomorrow I'll get it.

Hope all other school mates are reading...please decide a date to meet. I can arrange for the place.

Hi, this is Ajay. You have mentioned my name in one of your comments above. We were in the same class. Now I am known as Ajay M. Singh (till school I was Ajay Verma) !!! Remember Now ??

I remember all the teachers mentioned in above comments by different Michaelians ! Great Feeling. I remember the canteen wala old man and his son I think Stanzy... or was he ??
I can still get the smell of bread pakoras, kerosene stove and tea coming out of his canteen!
After school I am in touch with Bharat Bhushan Gupta, he was also in our class. Long time ago i.e. about 10 years back I had met Harvinder Narang, 7-8 years back met Paritosh Dayal Mathur at Pragarti Maidan,
In late Eighties i.e. about 20 yrs back I had met Chander Mohan Jain, he lives in Roop Nagar,
Had come across Pankaj Kohli in CP just by chance. Used to be good friends with Mukesh Monga but he I think shifted to USA. So did Pankaj Kohli, I think. Had seen Divya Harmilapi on the net. I remember Sanjiv Kumar, Rajinder Gupta, Om Prakash Gupta, Hardeep Lamba, Kanwaljeet Gulati, Manoj Bhargawa, Jaishiv Bhandari, Rajan Talwar, Ranu Saraf, Amrita Jhamb, etc. but never came across.

Right now its just Bharat Bhushan Gupta who I am in touch with.

I remember some of the teachers I think Mr Sehgal, Mrs Dogra and of the Mendonzas. I remember the names of only three of my classmates sadly - Rubina Naqvi (who I stayed in touch with) Dutt and Amit (Gupta?). I then move to Rosary School where I was the last batch of XIth befor 10+2. My strongest memory is of doing the play "prithviraj Chauhan" where I played Sanjukta. I think i was in house Venus. Priya

I was in the Jupiter house and Rajesh Batra was the Captain. I'm filled with nostalgia right now!! Those were the good old days. The teachers I can't forget are Mrs. Sethi, Mr. Saigal, Mrr Dogra, Mrs. Sohi, George Tweedy, Yolanda Mendonza, Melanie Mendonza, Pamela Singh.
